PI Research Associate Interviewed on CNN

Last week, Population Institute Research Associate Maniza Habib appeared on CNN Newsroom to discuss the rising prevalence of femicide worldwide and in the United States. The story comes on the heels of the tragic murder of a Mexican beauty influencer, Valeria Marquez, which occurred earlier this month on her livestream. Mexican authorities are investigating the matter as suspected femicide. Mexico holds one of the highest rates of femicide in the world. But femicide is not just a Mexican problem—it is a universal issue.

CNN Anchor Frederika Whitfield asked Habib about the prevalence of femicide in the United States, the impact of toxic masculinity on femicide, and some potential solutions. “When men are taught to see women as property and not people, violence becomes a way to assert power,” Habib explained. Habib offered some potential solutions: increased investment in data collection and analysis, promotion of comprehensive sexuality education, and passage of preventative laws such as gun control measures.
