Statement on the Passage of the American Health Care Act in the House

May 04, 2017

Statement from Robert Walker, President, Population Institute

“Today the House of Representatives passed the American Health Care Act (AHCA), a bill that will put affordable health care out of reach for millions of Americans. This bill is bad for virtually everyone, including women, minorities, and people with disabilities, but it is worst of all for women of reproductive age.

AHCA, as passed by the House, would return us to the days when insurance companies were allowed to charge women more just for being women. And the harm doesn’t stop there. The AHCA would also prevent people on Medicaid from going to Planned Parenthood, even if Planned Parenthood is their preferred or only available provider for services like birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment.

For all those who are concerned about the reproductive health and rights of women in this country, now is the time to make your voices heard. The Senate is expected to reject the AHCA, at least in its current form, but we can take nothing for granted. House passage of the AHCA is just the latest battle in a long and continuing assault on reproductive health at the federal and state levels."
