Population Institute Co-Hosts Summer Intern Series

On Tuesday June 17th the Population Institute held the first in a four-part series of intern receptions titled "Health, Rights, and Cupcakes." The event was held at the D.C. offices of the Population Institute in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)- Washington Office and the Universal Access Project. Interns from Congressional Offices and Non-Governmental Organizations were invited to hear speakers Dianne Stewart, Director of the Information and External Relations Division of the UNFPA, and Mike Beard, Executive Director of Advocacy at the United Nations Foundation and Global Health Director for the Better World Campaign.
Stewart spoke about the UNFPA's development work for women and girls, the importance of access to education and contraceptive care, as well as issues around adolescent pregnancy and child marriage. Beard described the UN Millennium Development Goals which expire in 2015 and the effort to create a new development agenda of Sustainable Development Goals beyond 2015.
The Population Institute will host three more events throughout the summer, with receptions on child marriage, gender based violence, and youth and adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights.
