Population Institute Launches “Halt the Assault” Campaign

April 05, 2012

Responding to the escalating political attacks on contraception and reproductive health, the Population Institute today launched a campaign aimed at halting the assault.  In unveiling the new effort, Robert Walker, President of the Population Institute, said, “Isn’t it time for all us—women and men—to let our political leaders know where we stand.  When leading political figures like Rick Santorum are talking about the “dangers of contraception,” and others, like South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, assert that “women don’t care about contraception,” it’s time for average Americans to stand up for reproductive health and rights.”

“It’s not just the political rhetoric that should concern us,” Walker warned, “family planning clinics in Texas and elsewhere are shutting down because states are slashing their support.  While the vast majority of Americans—women and men—support government programs that improve a woman’s access to contraceptives and reproductive health care, social conservatives mistakenly believe that they don’t care enough to speak out against these attacks on women and their reproductive health.”

“Everyone,” Walker said, “needs to speak out, whether it’s sending an email to a legislator, posting to their Facebook wall, attending a rally, or just telling Rush Limbaugh to get lost. In the weeks and months ahead, we will be looking for opportunities for people to make their voices heard.”
