Educate America Campaign

Now in its 22nd year, the Population Institute's highly successful and unduplicated Educate America Campaign raises public awareness of world population issues, especially the impact of rapid population growth on the global environment, health and social well-being.

Americans are familiar with many manifestations of human growth. We have all seen the effects of urban sprawl, air and water pollution, loss of wildlife habitat and agricultural land and green space, social disintegration, global warming, global insecurity and terrorism - conditions caused or exacerbated by excessive population growth. While we struggle with the symptoms of human growth in our own communities, overpopulation has even more devastating repercussions for those least able to cope with them: inhabitants of poor countries throughout the world.

By bringing information on population issues and policy to the doorsteps of Hometown, USA - through lectures and discussions at colleges and universities and before service and community organizations, as well as through the electronic and print media - the Educate America Campaign seeks to promote population stabilization at the earliest possible date consistent with safe, effective, efficient and voluntary solutions.

Program Structure

Through its Educate America Campaign, the Population Institute reaches hundreds of people in the United States. The campaign ranges from the Institute President’s lectures before college and university audiences to newspaper editorial board meetings, radio interviews and talk shows, and speeches before civic and service organizations. The cutting-edge population topics that will be discussed include the unmet need for family planning, environmental deterioration, deforestation, global warming, water scarcity, malnutrition and hunger, gender equity and equality, social disintegration, child and maternal mortality, and most importantly - how each of us can help to make a difference.

Past Educate America Campaign’s have included chapters of the United Nations Association of the USA, the World Affairs Council, the League of Women Voters, Kiwanis and Lions. The Population Institute staff identifies audiences and schedules Dr. Lawrence Smith, President of the Institute’s appearances, financed by a combination of honoraria from host colleges and organizations and the Institute's general operating funds.
