The Population Institute Global Media Awards (GMA) honor those who have contributed to creating awareness of population problems through their outstanding journalistic endeavors.
The awards serve to encourage editors, news directors and journalists to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of population issues and to stimulate high standards of journalism.
The Global Media Awards are designed to encourage greater media coverage of population and development issues. The awards are presented in developing countries working to resolve their population problems and are held in conjunction with Family Planning Study Tours. The tours offer winning journalists an opportunity to experience directly the priority placed on population issues by developing countries and their local communities as well as the actions taken by government and non-governmental organizations to solve them. GMA ceremonies and tours have taken place in the US, Mexico, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Cuba, China, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nepal, Kenya, Thailand, Senegal, Egypt, and the Philippines.
Historically, the Global Media Awards have been presented by heads of states and prominent leaders of the countries visited at official ceremonies attended by dignitaries. The Awards are presented in a formal ceremony-cum-reception in the host country. Among the dignitaries who have presented these prestigious awards are: the Presidents of Turkey, Indonesia, the Philippines; the Prime Minister of Tanzania and the King of Nepal.
